Last week we spent the day between Mullet and Puzzle Lake on the hunt for Shad. It’s still early in the season for their migration to our area but with low water levels and ideal weather we put some time in exploring to see what was biting. During the winter months here in Central Florida, we experience a run of American shad which travel up the St. Johns River to spawn. The water clarity was incredible and we were surrounded by wildlife – everything from bald eagles to alligators catching some sun on the banks. We stopped at a few spots to walk the shorelines where we caught a handful of bass and specs. The area begins to populate with spawning shad around mid-December and they remain in good numbers through mid-March. So, we will try again in the near future on our hunt for shad!
